Studio performance video of a piece I choreographed

Dancers: Gloria Moreno, Ashley Ruiz, Denia Lee, and Neveah Stewart

Song: "One More I Love You" by Alex Warren

 REFLECTION

The theme of my piece is "losing someone." I think that loss is something everyone experiences in their lifetime and is something people may even bond over. I tried to display this theme by having the dancers reach towards each other a lot in order to show that they don't want each other to leave. For instance, they reach toward the person on their right in the beginning when they are in the circle on the floor. Another example of this is when the three dancers run to the dancer in the middle at the very end. I spent about two weeks trying to find a song that would fit the theme I came up with. I chose the song "One More I Love You" by Alex Warren. I chose this song because he talks about how he would do anything to say goodbye to someone he lost. I tried to match the tempo of the movements to the tempo of the music. For instance, when the music gets really intense the dancers do a leap to the floor. I chose to do a leap because it is a big movement. I had the dancers go down to the floor out of the leap because I wanted it to seem like they're hurting so much thinking about this person they lost.

I used choreographic devices in order to help develop the movement. For instance, I used canon. I used this when the dancers reach their arm back after doing an over-curve onto the floor. Another device I used was retrograde. I had the dancers retrograde the phrase they do during the chorus of the song. There were a few rehearsals where I was stuck and didn't know how to transition into the next movement. Using these devices helped me create a floor pattern and create an outline for the next movement. While creating the piece, we had two class showings to show the progress we made. During those showings I was given feedback that I later applied to the piece while finishing it. One piece of feedback I was given was to make the piece travel on a diagonal instead of directly side. After fixing the formation a little bit, I applied this feedback to the piece.

If I were to do anything different, I would possibly make the movement travel back more. It seems to mainly travel forward and side a lot. I would also like to fill out the movement more. While the piece is complete it does still need to be cleaned and the timing does need to be fixed in a few places. Overall, I am happy with the piece and cannot wait to see them perform it. Unfortunately, the performance has been postponed and all I have is a studio performance of the piece.
